Govt secures water buses for commuters on Volta Lake

The government has secured three water buses to ferry commuters on the Volta Lake. The 55-seater water buses were acquired by the government at the cost of $22,500 from the United Kingdom.

They are meant to facilitate the smooth and safe transportation of passengers on the lake.

A water bus is a passenger shuttle that ferries people across a body of water.

Safety of commuters

Speaking to the Daily Graphic after taking delivery of the water buses at Akosombo, a former Managing Director of the Volta Lake Transport Company (VLTC), Mr Martin Hiles, who facilitated the acquisition of the buses, said the captains’ bridges of the water buses were expected to be installed by next week.

According to him, the new water buses were expected to operate between Akosombo–Kete Krachi and Agodeke in the Kwahu Afram Plains North, Kpando –Torkor and between Makango and Yeji in the Brong Ahafo Region.

He explained that the routes were outlined by the Ministry of Transport to guarantee the comfort and safety of commuters who would use the lake, particularly female traders.

Mr Hiles expressed the government’s gratitude to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority for its support in the delivery and operation of the waterbuses.
