Greater Accra makes finals of Airtel Rising Stars

The Greater Accra Region overshadowed their Voltarian counterparts to sweep away all the accolades in the final zonal competition of Airtel Rising Stars at the St. Pauls Senior High School Park, Denu last weekend.

Boys Team A from the Greater Accra Region led by prominent grassroots football trainer, Coach Maapa Inkoom qualified to the finals of this year’s Airtel Rising Stars competition with six points from three matches. Taking the second spot was also the Greater Accra Team B amassing four points and Volta Region Team B totalling 3 points from three games played. Greater Accra Region ladies also beat their Volta Region rivals 3-2 in a fierce penalty shootout in the female division.

Gabriel Bonnah, a fourteen year old midfielder from the Greater Accra Team B and Matilda Fodah from the Volta Girls team won the Overall Best Male and Female Player awards respectively for their exceptional performances at the end of the two-day competition.

Speaking at the event, the Zonal Business Manager for Eastern and Volta at Airtel Ghana, Mr. Kwaku Boating expressed his profound gratitude to the Ghana Football Association for partnering with Airtel Ghana to bring an end to a successful zonal competition.

“The competition has witnessed some promising talents that we look forward to camp them and bring out their maximum potential to be world stars. We at Airtel are committed to revolutionizing football development in the country that is why we have initiated a competition of this magnitude to establish a pool of talents for the sustenance of football which is the nation’s passion and unifier”, he reiterated.

In a related development, Airtel Ghana donated a set of football jerseys, footballs and kits to the St. Paul’s Senior High School football team. The donation is one part of this year’s Airtel Rising Stars competition where schools where the games are played are presented with these items as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility.

This year’s Airtel Rising Stars competition enters the finals in Sunyani from 28^th to 30^th August comprising boy’s teams from Western, Eastern Upper West, Northern, Greater Accra and hosts Brong-Ahafo Region whereas the ladies from Ashanti, Western, Upper West, Greater Accra, Upper East and hosts Brong-Ahafo battle it out for the ultimate prize.
