Gushegu assembly present funds to PWDs
The Gushegu District Assembly in the Northern Region has presented GH¢18,700 to 52 persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the district to help improve their living conditions.
The amount is from the PWDs share of the assembly’s common fund in fulfilment of the Disability Act.
Among the beneficiaries are students of the Wa Special School for the Blind in the Upper West Region and the Savelugu School for the Deaf in the Savelugu-Nanton Municipality in the Northern Region.
They received amounts ranging from GH¢200 to GH¢1,000, based on a criterion set by management of the fund in the area.
Intervention
At the presentation ceremony at Gushegu, the District Social Welfare Officer, Mr Tia S. Dokurugu, said the disbursement of the fund formed part of pro-poor social intervention policies by the government aimed at enhancing the living conditions of PWDs in the country.
He advised the beneficiaries to invest the money judiciously and not use it as pocket money, adding that he would lead a team to the communities where the beneficiaries lived to monitor their activities.
On behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Dokurugu expressed appreciation to the assembly for the gesture.
Commitment
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Gushegu, Mr Abdulai Seidu, indicated that the initiative formed part of the government’s commitment to change lives and transform the living standards of the people.
He said the assembly was concerned about the plight of the people, particularly the vulnerable, and it was for that reason that the government was working assiduously to reduce poverty in the area.
