Harness digital opportunities to drive Ghana’s future - President Mahama to youth

President John Dramani Mahama has called on young people in Ghana to take advantage of digital technologies and innovation to drive the country’s future development.

Addressing the 69th Independence Day celebrations, the President said the younger generation possessed unprecedented tools that could transform education, entrepreneurship and creativity.

“To the young people of this country, I see you, I hear you and I believe in your potential,” he said.

He noted that digital technology had become a powerful gateway to global opportunities.

“In your hands, a smartphone transforms into a classroom, a business platform, a creative studio and a gateway to the global economy,” he said.

Youth frustrations acknowledged

While encouraging young people to remain optimistic, the President acknowledged that many faced frustrations related to employment and economic opportunities.

However, he assured them that the government was implementing measures to expand opportunities for the youth.

“I also recognise your frustrations, and that is why government is investing in digital infrastructure, entrepreneurship programmes and innovation hubs across the country,” he said.

The initiatives, he added, would be implemented across major cities including Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi and Koforidua.

Education reforms

The President said the government was also reforming the education system to align with the needs of the modern economy.

In addition, he said internship and apprenticeship programmes were being expanded to help young people transition more easily from school into the workforce.

Message of preparation and discipline

President Mahama urged young people to remain disciplined and prepare themselves for future opportunities.

“But success will also depend on discipline, resilience and excellence,” he said.

“The future belongs to those who prepare for it.”

Celebrating student excellence

The President congratulated the 52 students who received the President’s Independence Day Award for schoolchildren and commended Kweku Secondary Technical School for winning the 69th Independence Day quiz competition.

“All of you represent the promise of Ghana’s future,” he said.

He urged young people to commit themselves to national development and excellence in whatever fields they pursue.

“Wherever you are and whatever you do, do it with excellence — do it for Ghana, do it for Africa and do it for the generations yet unborn.”
