The convict, Kojo Kegbe, who is also a driver, and his accomplice, now at large, used a locally made gun to attack and rob Kwadwo Yeboah of his Toyota Corolla taxi on May 14, 2015.

He was tried for robbery to which he pleaded guilty and was sentenced on his own plea.

Just after the court, presided over by Mr Justice Francis Obiri, sitting with additional responsibility as a circuit court judge, had passed the sentence, Kegbe appeared overtaken by the 20-year sentence and suddenly broke down in tears.

He pleaded with the court to show mercy on him but was handcuffed and taken away to begin his sentence.

Prosecuting, Inspector Martin Acheampong told the court that the complainant was a resident at Ashalley-Botwe near Madina, while the accused, Kegbe, a taxi driver, resided at Teacher-Mante in the Eastern Region.

On May 14, 2015, the complainant driving a Toyota Corolla taxi with registration number GX 5070-14 was operating within the Accra metropolis. On reaching the Achimota overhead, the prosecutor said, the accused and his accomplice, whose name was given only as Kojo, hired the services of the complainant to convey them to Pokuase.

The prosecutor said when they arrived at a junction at Pokuase, the accused person and his accomplice, armed with a locally made gun, attacked the complainant and threatened to kill him if he failed to surrender the vehicle to them.

“The complainant attempted to disobey the order but he was beaten by the two armed robbers who pulled him from the vehicle,” Inspector Acheampong told the court.

According to him, the complainant raised an alarm but the accused person and his accomplice drove the taxicab away.
“On June 8, 2015, upon reliable information, the accused was arrested at his hideout in a village near Teacher-Mante” the prosecutor said.

He told the court that in his caution statement, Kegbe admitted the offence of robbing at gunpoint and informed the police that after the robbery, his accomplice sent the car to Kumasi, where it was re-sprayed.

Inspector Acheampong added that the accomplice brought the vehicle to Kegbe who used the car for some few weeks till the car was sent back to Kumasi to be given to another person to be sold.
