The school, which was established on Marchs, 1946, is the first Catholic girls school in the country and has a secondary school located in Cape Coast and a training college in Takoradi.

At the launch in Accra last Tuesday, the secretary of Our Lady of Grace Senior High School’s oversight committee, Prof Agnes Aidoo, said the successes women had chalked up in the society placed a sacred duty on them to ensure that many girl children were freed from child marriages.

The 70th anniversary is slated for March 2016.

Prof. Aidoo said although Ghana had achieved great successes in basic education, there were still more than 500,000 children out of school and half of the number were girls.

“It is our duty to free many girl children whose development is thwarted by ignorance, discrimination, poverty and deprivation,” she added.

Catholic education

Prof. Aidoo said the Greater Accra, Volta and Western regions had the highest child marriage prevalence rates in the country, and added that it needed to be addressed urgently.

Prof. Aidoo, a past Holy Child student (HOPSAN), therefore, tasked the to use their Catholic education and training, to help eradicate the problem of underdevelopment and deprivation facing many girls in the country.

Strong foundation

In a speech read on her behalf, the Headmistress of the secondary school, Rev. Sr Josephine Anto, thanked the founders for the strong foundation they laid for the school from which the current student population was benefiting.

She said the school’s administrators had one goal to inculcate in students the value of reverence for every human person, as well as the development of talents, academic excellence, and punctuality, which would enable them to face the world with its complexities.

Holistic training

For her part, the Principal of the Holy Child College, Mrs Margaret Lemaine, said the founders of the college believed in holistic training of the human being, hence; the college authorities emphasised on that.
