He, therefore, asked them to take the learning of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) seriously and shift their focus from the use of chalk and blackboards.

Mr Buadi made the statement at the closing ceremony of a week-long ICT training organised at Brekusu in the Eastern Region, by GNAT, in collaboration with Ashesi University College under the Dream Oval Foundation, for 57 basic education teachers from deprived schools in the Western Region.

Initiative

The Dream Oval Foundation project is an initiative to provide teachers with free basic ICT training to enable them to use their newly acquired knowledge to enhance teaching and learning in and out of the classroom.

Mr Buadi explained that the traditional way of using chalk and blackboard was being replaced with projectors in the modern society.

He expressed the hope that the One Laptop per Teacher project would be implemented in all parts of the country to enhance teaching.
He also pointed out that teachers had roles to play in the transformation of the nation, and must, therefore, take their work seriously.

ICT training

The acting General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mr M.V.V.K. Demanya, said GH¢93,000 was spent on the training to improve the ICT skills of these teachers, and expressed the hope that the training would stimulate commitment on the parts of the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to provide facilities for the various schools for effective teaching and learning of ICT.

A former Secretary General of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mrs Irene Duncan Adanusa, urged the organisers to re-design the ICT programme by extending it to teachers in the primary schools.

An official of Dream Oval Limited, Mr Derrydean Dadzie, said the programme was aimed at bridging the knowledge gap through the creation, sharing and utilisation of knowledge with education and technology.

Mr Francis Ahene Afful, another official of the Dream Oval project, said they would do a follow-up on how the teachers would be faring after the programme.

While delivering his report, the course prefect, Mr Abraham Mensah, said they were taken through computer-based courses, including blogging, and expressed optimism that the training would enhance their practical competence.
