Irate youth storm public institutions in Tema, demand exit of previous government's appointees

A group of irate youth stormed the premises of several public institutions in Tema on Wednesday, 8 January 2025, demanding the immediate exit of appointees of the previous government.

Clad in red, the protesters targeted key establishments, including TDC Ghana Ltd, Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), and the Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO), calling for the resignation of top managers appointed under the former administration.

One of the aggrieved protesters, Kwame Dankwa, explained their grievances to journalists, stating, “They do not want any appointee of the previous administration to remain in office.” The youth reportedly went about locking up some offices during the protest.

“As you can see, we didn’t cause any commotion. We don’t have any problem with anybody. We came here to perform a task. However, if we come back or get information that they are doing something different, that will be a different story,” he warned.

The protest created chaotic scenes, leading to altercations between the youth and some workers at the institutions. The tension forced some staff members to flee the premises.

A timely intervention by police personnel from the Tema Regional Police Command prevented further escalation and ensured that no physical assaults occurred.
