Kasoa Walantu wells threat to life

Two deep wells at Kasoa Walantu which were dug 30 years ago and have been left uncovered all these years are beginning to cause disquiet among residents, especially in view of the danger it poses to children in the area.

The wells, which have served as the major source of water supply in the area, now present imminent risk due to their nearness to residential and business developments. Under the circumstances, the residents want the wells to be either covered or filled with anything solid as a way of destroying them as their present state endangers the lives of children who often play close to them.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Chief Environmental Officer for the Awutu Senya East District, Madam Alice Donkor, said her outfit would see to it that the wells were properly covered to make them safe.

She has urged developers to consult the district environmental office for advice before digging wells in the community.

A landlord who owns one of the wells, Madam Sherenta Dankwa, said she did not have enough money to raise a short wall round the well to protect citizens from the danger it posed as was being demanded by the district environmental office.
