Konkomba Students’ Union holds fund-raising
THE Konkomba Students’ Union (KONSU) has held a fund-raising and awards ceremony in Accra, on the theme, “Broadening the Knowledge Base of People: The Key to Peace, Unity and Advancement.”
The fund will be used to support brilliant, needy students from the Konkomba area to continue their education, while a significant portion of the fund will also be used to support the education of female students, who usually lack access to formal education.
At the ceremony, the Deputy Minority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Bimbilla, Mr Dominic Nitiwul, said 40 per cent of girls dropped out of school before they turned 18 due to early marriage. The situation was worse in the Konkomba communities where female children were not given equal opportunities to education as their male counterparts.
“It is important to help the girl- child to go to school. As a people we need to find out why more girls are left behind in terms of formal education and support them to go higher,” he said.
Mr Nitiwul, who donated $500 as seed money to establish the fund, described the theme as ‘relevant’ and encouraged the Konkomba youth to live in peace with their neighbours.
Sensitisation project
The National President of KONSU, Nakouwo Nborkan Solomon, said the union would embark on a project to sensitise people in selected communities at Prang in the Brong Ahafo Region to issues such as hygiene and health, peaceful coexistence, socio-cultural practices and constitutional rights. This would be done from January 4 to 10, 2016.
The Chairman of the Council of Elders of KONSU, Rev. Dr Michael M. Kopah, underscored the need for the youth on the various university campuses to take their studies seriously and avoid negative acts that would destroy their future.
Nine past members of the association who distinguished themselves in supporting the activities of KONSU were presented with mementos.
The occasion was also used to swear in a seven-member Council of Elders and the Konkomba Ladies Association of Ghana (KONLAG).
