Police arrest 2 with 'wee' concealed in water tanker

The Police in Ashanti on Wednesday made a big drug haul with the arrest of one Kwabena Alen Num who had concealed 610 parcels of compressed dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp in a water tanker.

Num had hidden the substance in a compartment of the water tanker but the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit of the police managed to arrest him upon a tip off.

The police gave the registration number of the water tanker as AS 4604 – G, which was arrested at Kodie in the Afigya Kwabre district of Ashanti.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Nathan Kofi Boakye who is the Ashanti Regional Police Commander briefing the press said the suspect was travelling from Kwame Danso in the Brong Ahafo region towards Kumasi.

He said the police got the tip off around 11am on August 5, 2015, that the said vehicle had onboard substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

He said the SWAT team under the command of Superintendent Chris Klomega, mounted a barrier at Kodie where the vehicle was intercepted and upon a search, the substances were found.

DCOP Boakye said when the suspect and the exhibits were brought to the police headquarters in Kumasi, one Martin Gyamfi showed up and tried to bribe Supt Klomega and his subordinates with GHȻ10,000 for them to release the items and the suspect.

He said Gyamfi was also arrested and that the police suspect that there were other kingpins behind the scene financing the illegal business of narcotics.

The police commander said investigations were ongoing to arrest the other members of the syndicate.
