The inauguration of the 800,000 euro project, funded by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), would facilitate smooth flight operations which, hitherto, were hampered by poor weather conditions in the morning or during the harmattan.

Work is currently on-going on another project to facilitate evening landing and take-off of aircraft at the Kumasi airport.

Inauguration

The Transport Minister, Mrs Dzifa Attivor, who inaugurated the system in Kumasi last Wednesday, said the provision of the facility was expected to boost the service operation of the GCAA.

She said the country’s aviation sector had undergone tremendous growth in recent years, and attributed the development to the government’s liberalisation of the aviation industry that had attracted more airlines to operate in the country.

Mrs Attivor stated that the installation of the modern navigational equipment formed part of the government’s programme to modernise the domestic airports.

She said the GACL would soon commence work on other projects at the airport, in line with the upgrading of the Kumasi Airport.

GCAA

The Director General of the GCAA, Air Cdre. K. Mamphey, said the installed system would not only guide pilots for safe landing during poor weather conditions but would also enhance safety in the industry.

He said the installation of the equipment formed part of the programme to enhance safety measures and policies as well as avoid the difficulties faced by pilots during landing under poor weather conditions.

In a related development, Mrs Attivor inspected other ongoing rehabilitation and upgrading works at the Kumasi Airport.

The $17.5 million projects, include improvement of the runway, carried out at night by the contractors, and installation of safety lights on the runway for safe landing at night.

According to Mr Emmanuel Mends-Fynn, Project Manager of Ghana Airport Company limited, work on about 41 per-cent of the total projects had been completed.
