‘Let’s address issues affecting women’s development’

The Head of Gender and Social Development at the Institute of Local Government Studies, Mrs Magdalene Kannae, has underscored the need for society to do away with perceptions and socio-cultural practices that affect women’s socio-economic development.

She said it was important to empower both men and women and give them equal opportunities to perform their responsibilities, instead of thinking that men should work and take care of women, instead of both working to support the family.

Dialogue

Mrs Kannae was speaking at the launch of the fourth National Women's Dialogue and Finance Fair, organised by the Women’s Financial Information and Resource Centre Ghana, a non-governmental organisation.

The two-day conference, scheduled for October 13 and 15, 2014 at the National Theatre, is expected to attract over 1,000 women delegates from all sectors of the economy, including those operating small and medium enterprises, who would have the platform to discuss issues to enhance their financial status.

The finance fair is expected to bring together banks, investment firms and microfinance institutions such as savings and loans companies that have innovative policies and creative products and services that financially impact on women directly.

Women from groups such as Presbyterian Women and Methodist Women’s fellowship and Hairdressers and Beautician Association are expected to partake in the dialogue.

Empowerment

Mrs Kannae, who also chaired the ceremony to launch the programme, indicated that economic empowerment of women was significant in the achievement of the various goals and targets in the campaign for gender equality.

She said it was important to empower women to play responsible roles to fight poverty and also actively take part in the decision-making process.

She  stressed the need for the government to ensure gender mainstreaming in all national issues and make the national budget gender- responsive  to the respective needs of men and women.

Insurance policies

In her presentation, the Senior Manager, Individual Life Administrator, Enterprise Insurance Company, Ms Geraldine Abaidoo, indicated that women contributed 40 per cent to the country's economy and played crucial roles in the maintenance of the family.

She, therefore, reaffirmed the need to empower women to take charge of their economic rights to enable them to support the family and the community as a whole.

She encouraged women to take advantage of insurance policies and other financial products from corporate organisations that sought to promote their businesses and their well-being.
