Let’s honour the living - Rev. Mensah Agbo

The Accra Presbytery Chairman of the Global Evangelical Church, Rev. Felix Mensah Agbo, has called on the government and civil society organisations to honour veterans in the country.

Rev. Agbo said this at a ceremony to mark this year’s  Remembrance Day in Accra, at which the church donated an assortment of food items valued at GH¢7,850 to the Veterans Association of Ghana.

He said it was time that the living were accorded their due courtesies instead of always extolling the dead.

He said even though it was important to remember the gallant soldiers who lost their lives in the fight to liberate the world, it was equally important to honour those alive and contribute to their well-being. "Remembering the dead is not enough, but caring for the living is also essential," he observed.

Rev. Agbo urged soldiers in the country to uphold the military tradition which is based on integrity and discipline.

He said the church was motivated to make the donation based on its core values that demanded of it to care for the needy, stressing that the event would become a yearly affair.

The President of the Retired Commissioned Officers Club, Brigadier General George Brock, received the items on behalf of the veterans. He thanked the church for the gesture and called on other civil society organisations to also come forward and help the association.

He commended the government for the measures it was taking to enhance the welfare of ex-servicemen in the country.

However, he said in spite of the efforts by the government to ensure their well-being, there was still room for improvement because their needs kept rising with each passing day.

Brigadier General Brock urged retired soldiers who were not yet members of the association to endeavour to register and become regular and consistent fellows.
