It had earlier donated assorted medical supplies and a refrigerator to the local CHIPS compound at a durbar held by the chiefs and people of the area in her honour.

Though the request came from the Anglican school, the foundation provided large quantities of the items to cover all the schoolchildren at Ampoma, the hometown of Mrs Mahama’s mother.

Donation to improve education

The First Lady, Mrs Lordina Mahama, who is the President of the foundation, said she had a deep attachment to Ampoma and her visit had helped her to better understand the challenges of the people and the factors that hindered the education of the young ones in the area.

She said the donation was to support efforts being made by the teachers and the community to improve the education of the children, especially the young ones.

"On behalf of the foundation, we are providing these items to help our schoolchildren, and it is my hope that it will encourage the children to come to school everyday and study hard", she said.

Mrs Mahama, therefore urged parents and guardians to do everything possible to encourage the children to stay in school in order for them to become good citizens who would contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of the country.

The First Lady indicated that the government was expanding access at all levels of the educational system to enable the children to reach their full potential as education was a social security tool for everybody.

Benefits of education

She said the benefits of education may not be immediately apparent, but in future the dividends would help to lift many families out of poverty.

She said currently there were several projects going on at Ampoma that would contribute to give a facelift to the town and also improve the living conditions of the people.

Mrs Mahama said the projects included market, an IT centre, a lorry park, a public toilet, kindergarten and nursery blocks and added that "I have been working hard to see to the completion of these projects because I know the benefits they will bring to my people".

Appreciation

The Ampomahene, Nana Nyako Kartah, expressed his appreciation to the government for the development projects, especially the road network which had greatly improved the movement of people and goods from the town to other areas of the country.

From Ampoma, the First Lady made a stop at Chiraa, also in the Sunyani West District in the Brong Ahafo, and donated a number of hospital equipment and supplies to the Chiraa Health Centre to supplement the government’s vision of expanding access and delivery of quality health care.

Support of NGOs

Presenting the items, Mrs Mahama indicated that even as the government continued to invest a lot in health infrastructure, improving medical supplies and personnel developement the support of non-governmental organisations was critical to further enhance quality health care.

The Chief of Chiraa, Nana Minta Afari II, expressed his appreciation to President Mahama and the First Lady for developing the various districts in the region.

He, however, appealed to the government to upgrade the Chiraa Health Centre into a polyclinic in order to help to properly care for the sick and pregnant women as well as to ease the pressure on the Sunyani Government Hospital.

The Sunyani West Health Director, Ms Eva Aryee, who received the items on behalf of the health facility, thanked the First Lady for the gesture.
