The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Mion Constituency of the Northern Region, Sulaiman Abubakar, has resigned from his position with immediate effect.
Abubakar announced his resignation in a letter dated August 8, 2026, addressed to the NPP Northern Regional Chairman. The resignation took effect the same day.
In the letter, Abubakar described his decision as a personal one, but did not provide further details about the specific reasons behind his decision to step down.
He expressed gratitude to the party’s Council of Elders, patrons, polling station and electoral area executives, as well as the wider membership and supporters of the constituency, for the confidence they reposed in him during his tenure.
“I am incredibly grateful to the Council of Elders, Patrons, Polling station and electoral area executives and the entire membership and supporters of our party in the constituency for the confidence reposed in me to serve our great party for this short period,” he stated.
Despite relinquishing the constituency chairmanship, Abubakar made it clear that his resignation does not amount to a departure from the NPP.
He affirmed that he remains an active and committed member of the party and pledged to continue supporting its efforts to regain political power in the 2028 general elections.
“I remain an ardent and good standing member of the party and will continue to discharge my role as a member to ensure we recapture power in 2028,” he said.
Abubakar also wished the constituency leadership well in its future activities and expressed his intention to maintain contact with the party.
For now, no specific reason beyond personal considerations has been given publicly for his resignation. His decision, however, brings his tenure as Mion Constituency Chairman to an end with immediate effect.
