GHATEX launches five-year road safety project to boost tourism

The Ghana Tourism Authority Ex-Staff Association (GHATEX) has launched a five-year Road Travel Safety and Tourism Project aimed at promoting safer road travel and strengthening confidence in Ghana as a safe destination for domestic and international tourists.

The initiative, launched on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra, is being implemented in collaboration with Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts (MOTCCA).

The project seeks to address concerns over road safety through sustained public education and behavioural change campaigns, with a particular focus on encouraging responsible road use, safer driving practices and greater public awareness of road safety.

Road transport remains the primary mode of travel in Ghana, connecting millions of people to tourist attractions, businesses, communities and social and cultural events. However, the persistent rise in road accidents has become a concern for public safety, economic activity and the tourism industry.

GHATEX believes that improving road safety is essential to sustaining tourism growth, noting that concerns over road travel safety have discouraged some Ghanaians and international visitors from travelling to some of the country’s tourist destinations.

The association also noted that road safety concerns affect everyday activities such as business travel, family visits and participation in social and cultural events.

With a budget of US$400,000, the project will focus on sustained public education and behavioural change campaigns.

Key activities will include the production and dissemination of animated videos, drama sketches and educational messages in English and selected Ghanaian languages, all aimed at encouraging responsible road use, safer driving practices and greater public awareness.

The launch was particularly significant because it coincided with the 52nd anniversary of Ghana’s transition from left-hand to right-hand driving in 1974.

GHATEX said it hoped to draw inspiration from the historic exercise, which it described as one of the country’s most successful public awareness campaigns, in promoting a new national culture of road safety.

The launch brought together stakeholders from the public and private sectors, including transport operators, insurance companies, telecommunications companies, tourism practitioners, development partners, donor agencies, government institutions and the media.

GHATEX called on stakeholders to support the initiative, which it believed would help reduce road crashes, save lives and create a safer road transport environment while enhancing tourism, promoting economic development and improving the quality of life for Ghanaians.
