Man goes beserk at Akwatia; Kills stepson, injures ex-wife, Good Samaritan

Black Star, a suburb of Akwatia in the Eastern Region, was last Wednesday thrown into a state of mourning when a 35-year-old man, Akwesi Martins, stabbed his one-and-a-half-year-old stepson to death, wounded his ex-wife and a Good Samaritan and later committed suicide.

Martins, who attempted suicide after the gruesome act, died at the St Dominic’s Hospital at Akwatia, where his ex-wife, Ms Theresa Yaa Yeboah, 24, and the Good Samaritan, Mr Abraham Mensah, are also receiving treatment.

The Akwatia District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Francis Aboagye, told the Daily Graphic that the two, though in critical conditions, were responding to treatment.

The police have already launched investigations into the matter.

Precedents

According to Mr Aboagye, Martins and Theresa, who had lived as a couple in Suhum, broke up two years ago, after which she relocated to Akwatia Black Star to live with her parents.

After two years, Martins, according to Mr Aboagye, last Wednesday visited his ex-wife, who now had a one-and-a-half-year-old boy with another man.

Eyewitnesses account indicated that Theresa welcomed her ex-husband and even served him food in her room.

Shortly after, they said, Theresa was heard screaming for help, but before her parents and others could go to her rescue, Martins had already taken his pound of flesh.

According to Mr Aboagye, Martins first stabbed the young stepchild, who died instantly, and went further to inflict wounds on the forehead, hands, chest and other parts of the body.

One of two gentlemen, Mr Mensah, who moved in to help had his fair share of Martins’s anger.

Mr Aboagye said it was at that point that Theresa’s parents called the police to intervene.

He said Martins, perhaps frightened by his act, swallowed some poisonous substance and was vomiting when the police arrived on the scene.

Martins died at the St Dominic’s Hospital yesterday.
