A lack of rehabilitation, innovative activities and promotion at the various sites had led to low patronage, thereby retarding the potential that could improve the livelihoods of the indigenes.

Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the sector Minister, stated these at Damango when she paid a courtesy call on the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, and the overlord of the Gonja Traditional Area, Yagbonwura Tutumba Boresa II at his palace.

Tourist sites

The minister said most of the facilities had had little or no maintenance over the years, thereby leaving them in very deplorable conditions, adding that their refurbishment would go a long way to address the challenges confronting the sector as well as attract more investors into the country.

The minister led a delegation from her ministry together with 30 people from the creative arts industry on the visit.

The delegation included the Director of the National Theatre, Mrs Amy Appiah Frimpong, representatives of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) and the Ghana Actors Guild.

Activities for the week’s working visit included a tour of the various tourist sites, interaction with tour operators and others in the hospitality industry, to find out the challenges confronting the industry in the region and the best ways to ensure its sustainability .

“We are using these stars in the creative arts industry to influence others in the country to also visit these tourist centres, since they will post pictures of all these tourist attractions on their social media platforms for their followers to see the interesting tourist sites”, she said.

Northern Region

Mrs Ofosu-Adjare said the Northern Region was undoubtedly endowed with rich and amazing tourist sites such as the Larbanga Mosque.
She noted that the sites could compete with other tourist sites outside the country, adding however, that they needed some beautification to make them look more attractive to visitors.

The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, commended the ministry for its effort to promote the tourism sector.
The team visited the Larbanga Mosque, the Mysterious Stone as well as the Mole Game reserve all in the West Gonja District of the Northern Region.
