The project, funded from the Urban Development Grant 3 and being undertaken by Samotrust Company Limited, an Accra-based construction firm, is expected to be completed in nine months.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Kwabena Nkansah-Asare, cut the sod for the commencement of work on the project at a ceremony at Oda last Wednesday.

The function attracted many dignitaries, including the Member of Parliament (MP) for Oda, Mr William Agyapong Quaittoo, the Krontihene and Queenmother of Akyem Kotoku Tradiational Area, Obrempong Gyamfi Saforo Kyereh, and Nana Akua Asantewaa respectively and the Medical Superintendent of the Oda Government Hospital, Dr Kobina Awotwe Wiredu.

Speaking at the function, Mr Nkansah-Asare, said the project formed part of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s Better Ghana agenda of improving the health sector by upgrading all regional and some district hospitals in the country through the construction of modern state-of-the art facilities such operating theatres, wards, emergency units and out-patient departments.

He stressed that it was his personal commitment to develop the Oda township to make it a befitting municipal capital, adding that conscious efforts were also being made to develop other communities in the municipality.

Mr  Nkansah-Asare mentioned other projects under construction in the municipality which were being financed with the assembly’s share of the common fund as CHPS compounds with ancillary facilities at Suponso, Yaw Donkor, Asibirim and a six-unit classroom block for the Akyem Manso Presbyterian Primary School.

He advised the staff of the hospital to continually work hard, maintain high professional standards and render the best services to patients who patronise the hospital.

The Medical Superintendent of the Oda Government Hospital, Dr Kobina Awotwe Wiredu, commended the municipal assembly for providing the new operating theatre for the hospital, stressing that it would improve the quality of health care rendered to the general public.

He noted with pride that at the recent Eastern Regional annual performance review meeting, the Oda Government Hospital was adjudged the best revenue generating district hospital in the region.

Dr Wiredu was full of praise for the MP for Oda, Mr Agyapong Quaittoo, for providing a borehole for the hospital to solve its perennial water problem as well as donating two new ergo meter bicycles for the physiotherapy department.

He complained about lack of an obstetrician/gynaecologist, a general surgeon, low capacity standby generating set, an ambulance and a modern male ward, and appealed to the assembly and non-governmental organisations to come to the aid of the hospital.
