MTN Ghana Foundation supports teaching of core subjects

MTN Ghana Foundation today announced the launch of its Teachers’ Improvement Awards Programme. The Teachers’ Improvement Awards Programme is designed to assist Ghanaian teachers in first and second cycle public institutions who seek to further their education in Science, Mathematics or English.

Award beneficiaries may pursue a first or Masters level degree at the University of Cape Coast or University of Education, Winneba.  

Commenting on the program, the Executive Director of the MTN Ghana Foundation, Cynthia Lumor, outlined the criteria for selection of applicants as follows: 

• Applicants must have a minimum of five (5) years teaching experience.

• Applicants must be teaching in a public institution at the time of the application and must commit to returning either to that institution or another public institution upon completion of the sponsored program. 

• Applicants shall be bonded to remain in the teaching service for a minimum of five years upon completion of the first degree or six(6) years for the Masters program. 

• The program is open to teachers who wish to pursue courses in English, Science (Integrated Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology) or Mathematics only.

• Applicants must have qualified for admission to University of Cape Coast or University of Education, Winneba before applying. 

Mrs. Lumor further confirmed that the MTN Ghana Foundation was committing a total award of GHC 125,000 per annum to sponsor 20 teachers every year.

“It is the firm belief of the MTN Ghana Foundation that beneficiaries of the Teachers’ Improvement Award programme will come back equipped with higher educational skills to enhance skills and methods of teaching”, she said. 

The Acting Deputy Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr Stephen Adu, commended MTN for their support to the education sector. He said, increasingly, Science and Mathematics development is being linked to economic growth and the initiative by the MTN Ghana Foundation will in the long run contribute significantly to the development of the country.  

Present at the launch was Mrs. Nabila Williams, Educationist, Project panel member and representative of the MTN Ghana Foundation Board,  Mr. Damanya, Acting General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and Ms. Rebecca Ocran from the Gender Desk of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT).

Submission of applications is opened till the 25th June, 2015.
