“I want to appeal to the chiefs and people of the Northern Region to give us the needed cooperation to work by ensuring that there is peace in the region,” he stated.

The minister observed that without peace, it would be difficult to ensure accelerated development of the region.

According to him, funds expended on maintaining peace in some parts of the region could have been put into other uses to facilitate growth in the region.

Appeal

Mr Abubakari made the appeal when he and his deputy, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, paid a courtesy call on the Yagbonwura, Tutumba Borease I, at the Jakpa palace in Damongo in the West Gonja District in the Northern Region.

The visit, which was part of the minister’s familiarisation tour since he assumed office, was to formally introduce himself to the chiefs and the people and also seek their blessings, support and cooperation to enable him to perform his duties effectively.

He indicated that the government was committed to ensuring lasting peace in the region to bring about development, explaining that without peace, there would be no development.

Priority

Mr Abubakari further entreated the chiefs to prioritise peace in their adjudications to ensure lasting harmony at their respective traditional areas.

According to him, if the chiefs failed to solve the minor incessant conflicts in their areas, it can fester into major disturbances that wil not only affect the development of their communities, but the entire region.

Commendation

Yagbonwura Borease I in his remarks commended President John Mahama for Mr Abubakari’s appointment, indicating that his appointment could serve as an inspiring factor for the youth in the region to aim high.

He expressed the hope that the minister would work assiduously to accelerate the development of the region to enhance the lives of the people.

The chief also implored the minister to continue the good work done by his predecessors to sustain the prevailing peace in the area.
