New Christian books offer hope to youth struggling with sports betting

Reverend Emmanuel Opoku Mensah is set to launch two new Christian books in Accra on December 14, offering spiritual guidance and practical support to young people struggling with the rising influence of sports betting.

The books, titled The Trend of Sports Betting and Gaming Among the Youth: A Christian Apologetic Response and 150 Godly Golden Quotes on Sports Betting, present what the author describes as a clear, biblically grounded response to a habit that has become widespread among young Ghanaians.

A statement announcing the launch said sports betting has evolved into one of the fastest-growing behaviours among the youth, leaving many grappling with addiction, financial setbacks, guilt and uncertainty about how the practice aligns with their faith. It noted that while some young people are actively seeking a way out, others are simply looking for clarity about what Scripture teaches on the matter.

According to the statement, the books are intended to offer “clarity, conviction, and hope” by providing a deeply biblical and practical examination of why sports betting does not align with God’s best intentions for believers. They combine theological reflection, real-life experiences and spiritual encouragement to help readers break free from harmful habits or to support others who may be struggling.

Rev Opoku Mensah said the inspiration for the books came from witnessing the often unseen battles many young people endure as they chase quick financial gains through betting.

“Countless young people are trapped in cycles of betting, hoping for instant breakthroughs. But true hope, peace, and lasting transformation only come from God’s truth,” he said.

The books explore issues such as the spiritual and psychological effects of betting, the biblical principles that guide wise and godly decisions, steps believers can take to walk in freedom, and empowering truths aimed at helping individuals renew their minds.

The launch is expected to attract church leaders, youth ministry workers, parents and others concerned about the growing grip of betting culture on the youth. Organisers say the event will provide a platform for reflection, dialogue and spiritual renewal as communities seek to address the pressures facing young people today.
