NGO gives basic school borehole

Multiple Concept Group (MCG), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has constructed a borehole for the Nii Sowa Din Memorial School at Ashaley-Botwey in Accra to solve the water problem that the school faced.

The presentation was done as part of the annual Western Union ‘Back-to-school’ bonanza.

Good sanitation

The project is part of efforts aimed at promoting good sanitation and helping prevent cholera and other water-related diseases among the schoolchildren.

It was inaugurated by the Chief of Nmaidjor, Nii Okpelor Sowah Ablorh.

Inaugurating the borehole, a representative of Western Union, Mr John Nyamador, said it had, over the years, been supporting less privileged basic schools through the annual ‘Back-to-school’ promotion.

He explained that the Nii Sowa Din Memorial School was selected among some underprivileged basic schools facing challenges, especially access to potable drinking water.

Relief

The Headmaster of the school, Mr Ibrahim Mumuni, said access to potable water had been a major problem for the school over the years and, therefore, it was a relief for the administration to have received such support from a corporate body.

He said the situation had been very worrying because the pupils often had to abandon lessons in search of water and that negatively affected teaching and learning.

An official from the Basic Education Unit of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mrs Doris Nuako, thanked the MCG for its assistance through Western Union to the school.

She said access to potable water had been a challenge to the community, a situation which had led to private water suppliers charging dearly for water.

Mrs Nuako said the borehole would help solve the water problem and improve teaching and learning in the school.

The Adenta Municipal Director of Education, Dr Kwesi Hutchful, commended Western Union for its support to the school and urged the management of the school to take good care of the facility.
