NLC directs CLOGSAG to rescind decision to strike
The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), to rescind its decision to embark on a nationwide strike, which was scheduled to begin today, 9 March 2026.
In a statement issued by the Commission, the NLC said the strike declaration by the association contravenes provisions of the Labour Act.
"The NLC, in pursuant of its powers under Section 139 of the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651) directs CLOGSAG to remind the decision as it contravenes Sections 159 and 160 of Act 651," the statement signed and issued on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the NLC by the Head of Public Relations, Larry George Botchway, said.
The statement explained that Sections 159 and 160 of the Labour Act require any party intending to embark on strike action to notify the other party and the Commission by serving a seven-day notice. A strike may only be undertaken after the expiration of the notice period if there is no intervention by the Commission under Section 161 of the Act.
According to the NLC, CLOGSAG did not comply with these legal provisions before announcing the strike.
"CLOGSAG failed and/or refused to comply with these provisions of the law as stated above, consequently, the declaration of strike by CLOGSAG constitutes an illegality under the Labour Act, 2023 (Act 651).
"The disputing parties are hereby summoned to appear before the Commission on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at 2 pm," the statement said.
The Commission said it remains committed to ensuring peaceful and harmonious industrial relations in accordance with the law.
