The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) that initiated the nationwide exercise has now decided to shift focus to the regions where attention will be given to a particular regional capital at a time while the rest of the country also partake in the exercise in their respective communities.

The maiden regional exercise was held in the Ashanti Region in January this year. President John Mahama and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, participated in the exercise.

At a press briefing in Tamale last Tuesday, the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, said the region was ready to host the exercise. He asked District Chief Executives (DCEs) in the region to play a leading role to ensure the success of the exercise.

The minister also entreated the media, especially the various radio stations in the region, to use their medium to whip up interest of residents to participate in the exercise.

According to him, the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) will also engage with traditional and opinion leaders to get their support so that they can lead their people to join in the exercise.

A Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Odododiodoo Constituency, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, explained that the programme formed part of the government’s efforts at ensuring a clean environment.

The minister said his outfit would embark on a week’s inspection tour of the region before the sanitation exercise to inspect development projects and also ascertain the challenges in the communities to see how they can be addressed.

He appealed to the chiefs and people in the area to support the fight against insanitary conditions to ensure good health. The minister reminded them that achieving a clean environment was a collective responsibility of all in the country and not the government alone.
