NPP’s Abronye DC refuses food and water after arrest - Lawyer confirms

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has begun a hunger strike while in police custody, his lawyer has confirmed.

According to his counsel, Enoch Afoakwa, the decision is a protest against what Abronye considers political persecution following his arrest and subsequent two-week remand.

“Abronye is a man full of life. He knows that this is just mere political persecution, and certainly he is hopeful that his liberty will be restored,” Afoakwa told reporters.

The lawyer explained that his client views the hunger strike as both a symbolic act and a means of protecting himself while in custody. “Yes, he is pursuing what he is pursuing in furtherance of democracy. Certainly, [he is on a hunger strike],” he said.

Mr Afoakwa added that Abronye was refusing food and water out of fear for his safety. “Once you are being handled this way, will you trust that the same people handling you in a manner as if you have committed a treasonable offence—when they give you water, will you take it? When they give you food, will you take it? Certainly, he needs to protect his life and under the circumstances, that is the reason he is on hunger strike,” he stated.

Abronye is facing one count of publication of false news and one count of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace.

He was first remanded on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, when he made his debut in respect of the charges.

Abronye has been accused of stating on a television platform that all strategic meetings conducted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Akwatia had the Inspector General of Police (IGP in attendance.

Again, the Bono Regional Chairman is alleged to have stated that the current IGP, Tetteh Yohuno, is the “most corrupt” IGP in the country’s history.

He has, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is to reappear in court on Friday, September 19, 2025.
