The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has condemned the alleged assault of students of the Techiman Krobo Nursing Training College by officers of the Ghana Police Service during a campus demonstration over welfare concerns.
The incident occurred on Monday, July 27, 2026, when trainees took to the streets to protest against deteriorating welfare conditions on campus, including poor feeding arrangements, unacceptable sanitary conditions, and inadequate communication between college management and the Students' Representative Council.
According to NUGS, the students resorted to a peaceful demonstration only as a last resort after exhausting all internal avenues for constructive dialogue with school authorities.
The protest reportedly turned violent after some students allegedly threw stones at police officers, leading to the officers making several arrests and firing gunshots while attempting to disperse the crowd. Video footage circulating online captured trainees running as gunshots were heard, with officers simultaneously making arrests. The Public Relations Officer of the Students' Representative Council of the Techiman Krobo Nursing Training College confirmed today in an interview with Lawson TV that all the students arrested have since been released.
In a statement signed by its President Rashid Ibrahim, Esq., NUGS stressed that the 1992 Constitution guarantees every Ghanaian citizen the right to peacefully assemble and demonstrate, and that students do not lose this right simply because they are on campus.
"NUGS strongly condemns the reported assault on these students. The use of force against unarmed students who were peacefully expressing their concerns is unacceptable and has no place in a democratic society," the statement read .
The union has called on the Inspector-General of Police to immediately order a thorough and independent investigation into the incident and ensure that any officer found to have acted unlawfully is held accountable.
It also urged the Ministry of Health and the management of the Techiman Krobo Nursing Training College to provide medical support to any injured students and address the welfare issues that triggered the protest.
The students had highlighted several specific grievances, including changes to feeding arrangements under the school's current principal, Ellen Dwamena.
Students alleged that under the previous principal, they received three meals daily for a feeding fee of GH¢1,800, but this had been reduced under the new leadership. Some students have called for the principal's removal, describing her as autocratic and insensitive to their welfare.
