‘Oh, Sarpong Kumankuma…’ — Widow’s tearful farewell to husband lost in August 6 crash

“Oh, Sarpong Kumankuma, do hear my call and come back.” These words captured the anguish of Hannah Sarpong as she mourned her husband, Dr Samuel Sarpong, who was among the eight people killed in the August 6 helicopter crash.

She spoke of the impossibility of accepting his sudden departure and the emptiness left in their home. “Tell me this news is not true. The day is gloomy, the sun is gone, the weather is thick, darkness is falling, and the space is empty. Hear the voice of your beloved wife and children, my dear husband.”

She reminisced about his comforting presence, which always brought hope and protection. “We can still hear the sound of your footsteps around the house, offering care and safety for the family. Your presence represented hope, your words bred love, and your work produced joy and happiness,” she said.

Mrs Sarpong recalled his final call on that fateful Wednesday morning. He had told her he was leaving for Obuasi on a national assignment and would return soon. “I am still looking forward to welcoming you back home, my dear husband,” she said, expressing the shock and sorrow that continue to pierce her heart.

Beyond his public life, she celebrated him as a devoted partner and father. “You made our home a place of peace, a kingdom of life, and a home of happiness that reinforced family unity. You prayed with us, dreamed with us, and stood by us no matter the season,” she said, highlighting his unwavering love and commitment.

Her tribute ended with a message of eternal hope and farewell. “You ran a good race, my husband. May the doors of heaven be open for you until we meet again. Sarpong Kumankuma, nanti yie. Damirefa Due.”
