Organisational policies should be gender sensitive

The Director of ABANTU for Development, Dr Rose Mensah-Kutin, has called on public and private organisations to strengthen gender policies in their organisations.

She said currently, laws, regulations and policies in many organisations in Ghana lacked gender sensitivity, adding that most organisations did not consider gender issues when drawing up company policies.

Dr Mensah-Kutin made the statement at a one-day training programme organised by Leadership Studies Institute (LSI), in conjunction with ABANTU for Development, on the theme: “Gender in organisations.”

Retired women

Dr Mensah-Kutin stated that different generations of women had a lot of experiences, but indicated that the contributions of some of these women were not remembered as soon as they left the private or public sector.

“We lose a wealth of knowledge and experience,” she added.

Dr Mensah-Kutin said corporate organisations had the responsibility of preserving the history of the contributions of such women and added that many young women needed the necessary resources to push them to have their voices heard.

Gender equality dimension

She debunked the perception that leadership roles could only be occupied by men, saying it was important to bring a gender equality dimension to organisational development to increase the number of women in decision-making.
