Over 4,000 Ghanaians benefit from training in China

More than 4,000 Ghanaians have benefitted from various short and long-term training programmes in China since 2000 under the sponsorship of the Chinese government.

Last year, 1,200 Ghanaians benefitted from Chinese programmes, while 912 persons also benefitted this year.

The Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Accra, Mr Chai Zhijing, said this at a review meeting organised by his office in Accra.

At the ceremony, beneficiaries of Chinese training programmes from the ministries, media and other sectors of the country shared experiences of their stay in China.

The training programmes started shortly after the China-Africa Cooperation Forum in Beijing, China, in 2000.

“The objective of the programmes is to share China’s experience of economic and social development with Ghana,” Mr Chai said.

As part of the cooperation between the two countries, there are other collaborative programmes that are going on, while others are yet to take off.

Projects

Mr Chai mentioned the James Town fishing landing site project, which would be executed under a Ghana-China initiative.

“We are going to undertake the project that means we are going to donate it to the Ghanaian side,” he explained.

Feasibility studies of the project have been completed and design works are now underway.

According to Mr Chai, the project will help the fishery sector in Ghana to have better facilities since the site would have a port, workshops and cold storage facilities which are necessary for the industry.

Mr Chai indicated that another programme to connect 300 villages in Ghana to satellite facilities was in the offing.

The review meeting, he said, was to enable the Economic and Commercial Counsellor’s Office to assess how beneficial the training programmes had been for those who had been to China.

He stated that there was the need to have feedback to improve upon the programmes through better arrangements.
