Oye Lithur leads delegation to UN Social Development Confab in New York

THe Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur has lead a twenty member delegation to the 53rd conference of the United Nations Commission for Social Development in New York.

The conference which is on the theme "Rethinking and strengthening social development in the contemporary world" is being held from February 4 to 13, 2015.

The delegation include the Chair of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Employmemt, Social Welfare and State Enterprises, Mr Joseph Amewude who is the MP for Afadzato South, and the Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament, Mr Robert Osafo-Mensah, MP for Asunafo North.

The conference brings together government officials from member countries, non-governmental organisations (NGO's), civil society groups and vulnerable groups.

Aside the prority theme, some of the topics that are to be discussed during the conference include; Reducing inequalities a key to social development; The role of shared society in achieving socially sustainable and inclusive development; People first community responses to human trafficking and Achieving social development agenda through traditional cented education.

Among some of the panel discussions that would be held would be on "Contribution of social development to the transition from Millennium Development Goals to Sustainable Development Goals".

This years conference is a follow-up to the Status of the World Summit for Social Development, the twenty-fourth Special session of the General Assembly, the report of the secretary general on the modalities for the third review and appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Aging 2002, the report of the secretary general on the preparations for and observance of the twentieth annivrsary of the International Year of the Family and Review of relevant United Nations Plans and Programmes of Action pertaining to the situation of social groups.

The conference coincides with the Commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the World Summit for Social Development.

Ghana will as part of the confence hold a side event on the theme "Social Protection: A strategic tool for povrty reduction and bridging the inequality gap in Ghana.
