Petition on CHRAJ boss conduct still at Flagstaff House - Amaliba (audio)

The office of the Chief Justice was yet to receive a directive from President John Dramani Mahama to investigate allegations of corruption against the Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Ms Lauretta Lamptey.

According to Mr Alex Asante Acheampong, the Judicial Secretary, no such petition had reached the desk of the Chief Justice as of close of work on Monday.

But Mr Abraham Amaliba, a member of the legal team of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) who made public the directive of the President said the petition was still going through the processes at the Flagstaff House before it would get to the Chief Justice.

“I can confirm to you that the President has asked that it should go,” he told Citi FM.

The constitution demands that the President forwards any petition he receives regarding the removal of the Commissioner of CHRAJ to the Chief Justice for action.

Hence Mr Amaliba at the weekend announced on Joy FM that President Mahama has fulfilled that constitutional obligation.

Ms Lamptey reportedly spent $148,000 on her 33-month rent and an additional $180,000 on renovating her official residence.

Although she has explained the circumstances under which the money was spent, many insist she must be removed from office.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Mr Frank Annor-Dompreh, and the Progressive Nationalists Forum (PNF) then submitted separate petitions to the President asking for the removal of the commissioner.

The Daily Graphic in September reported that Ms Lamptey, in August this year, moved into a hotel after the US$5,500 monthly rent for her apartment at the African Union (AU) Village expired.

The daily rate for the hotel is $456.25 being paid in cedis.

This was because Ms Lamptey was awaiting the completion of her official residence, which was still under renovation, three years after assuming the position.
