Phone dealer grabbed over attempt to murder chief
A 24-year-old mobile phone dealer has been arrested for allegedly masterminding an assassination attempt on a chief at Assin Awisam in the Central Region.
The suspect, identified as Francis Nsowah, was said to have recruited a gang of criminals at the Konkomba Market in Accra to carry out the operation.
However, the gang he recruited was made up of an undercover team of the Anti Armed Robbery Squad Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service who pretended to be assassins to eliminate the chief, Nana Darko Mante.
According to the police, the mission of the suspect, which was dubbed “a planned revenge”, was to eliminate the chief for allegedly pursuing and bullying him for dating his daughter in 2008.
Police receive intelligence
Briefing journalists in Accra yesterday, the Director General of the CID, Commissioner of Police (COP) Prosper K. Agblor, said the police received the information that the suspect was recruiting assassins to murder the chief on August 29, 2014.
Following the information, he said the CID mounted surveillance on the suspect, who was at Assin Fosu, in his efforts at recruiting a criminal gang at the Konkomba Market to execute his mission.
On September 1, 2014, he said the undercover team met with the suspect where they offered themselves as criminals who were ready to do the job.
As their reward for the mission, he said, the suspect promised the gang part of the chief’s gold after the successful execution of the task.
After briefing his recruits for the mission, Mr Agblor said the suspect gave them GH¢100 for their transportation to Assin Fosu on a scheduled date for further briefing on the agenda.
The arrest
The undercover team, convinced about the intent of the mobile phone dealer, arrested the suspect for questioning.
During interrogation, he said, it was revealed that Nsowah was befriended the chief’s daughter in the year 2008.
While they were dating, he said, the chief had the suspect arrested.
