One of their accomplices, identified only as Kwame, who is said to have recruited them into the illegal operation, is currently at large.

They are said to pose as potential car buyers, who target cars with 'for sale' signs on them and then bolt with the car during test driving.

The police have so far retrieved three cars make up of  an unregistered Kia Sonata and two other registered cars.

One of the cars, which is riddled with bullet marks, is currently parked at the Accra Regional Police Command.

Briefing journalists, the Accra Regional Police Commander said on June 6, 2016, the police had a tip-off that some persons were offering cars suspected to have been hijacked for sale at Sowutuom in Accra.

He said upon receiving the information, the police proceeded to the location where they found the three persons negotiating with a buyer.

The suspects, he said, quickly jumped into a Kia Sportage vehicle with registration number GR 276-Z and sped off.

The police gave them a hot chase from Sowutuom, through Asago to Capital Hill where the three suspects abandoned the car and took to their heels.

In the course of pursuing the suspected car snatchers, the police fired warning shots and also fired at the vehicle in an attempt to ground it.

The police later arrested Salifu and Mensah at the Capital hill junction.

According to Mr Bonga, one of the suspects, whose name was given as Kwame, managed to escape.

During investigations, Mr Bonga said the two suspects led the police to retrieve a Toyota Corolla with registration number GC-1462-12 and an unregistered Kia Sonata which they snatched from two victims.

He said investigations revealed that the suspects had been in the car-snatching business for the past five years.
