Ashanti Region: Police on manhunt for armed robbers after foiled highway attack

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for four armed robbery suspects who fled after attempting to rob passengers aboard two Sprinter buses along the Kumasi–Bibiani highway between Ahwerewa and Esaase.

According to a police statement, the incident occurred around 7:30 pm on June 2, when five armed men, one wielding a pump-action gun, stopped the buses at gunpoint and began robbing passengers.

The Nkawie Divisional Police Patrol Team arrived at the scene in time to disrupt the robbery. Upon spotting the officers, the armed suspect opened fire on the patrol team.

The police returned fire, fatally wounding the gunman. He was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor at the Afari Government Hospital.

The remaining four suspects escaped and are currently at large. Police believe some may have sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange.

Medical professionals and facilities have been urged to report any individuals presenting with gunshot injuries to the nearest police station.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Afari Government Hospital morgue for preservation and further investigation.

The Police Command commended the patrol team for their bravery and swift response, which prevented what could have been a tragic outcome.
