Police to receive orientation on operations of Ecowas Brown Card Insurance Scheme

The Ghana National Bureau of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme is set to organise a two-day orientation programme in Accra.

Scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, the programme is expected to benefit over 120 police officers of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).

Explaining the aim of the programme to the media, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO)/General Secretary, Mr Patrick K. Agyekum said: “The police play a vital role in enforcing motor road traffic regulations, which equally applies to visiting motorists from member states of ECOWAS. There is therefore the need for the police to gain a good insight into the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme.”

He said the objective of the scheme was to ensure fair and prompt payment of compensation to victims of motor accident caused by foreign motorists visiting Ghana from other ECOWAS member states.

The Brown Card Insurance Scheme covers a third-party liability for injury, death and property damage.

The scheme, therefore, guarantees compensation to third party victims of cross border accidents, thereby leading to the realisation of the free movement objectives of ECOWAS.

“The Ghana National Bureau therefore needs to offer a comprehensive orientation that educates our stakeholders in the whole country on matters of the Brown Card Insurance Scheme. The Bureau will organise similar programmes for staff of member insurance companies, CEOs of the insurance and brokerage companies, the judiciary, medical doctors, transporters and transport unions,” Mr Agyekum stated.
