The gun of General Constable Issifu Seidu of the Formed Police Unit of the Ghana Police Service went off shortly after he had escorted some armed robbers from the Madina Police Station to the Accra Regional Police Command.

Constable Seidu was part of a team of policemen tasked to escort eight suspected gangsters and two of their accomplices arrested in Tema and Accra in connection with robberies at East Legon, Atraco and Madina.

Police confirmation

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer at the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mrs Effia Tenge, confirmed that the incident happened at 10:30 a.m. last Wednesday while the command was preparing to brief the media of the arrest of the 10 suspects.

She said Constable Seidu, after he had joined his colleagues to line up the 10 suspects, went back to the police van which had been used to convey the suspects to take his mobile phone which he had left in the van.

“We heard a gunshot, and immediately, we rushed to the vehicle where he had gone to pick his phone. When we got there, we realised he had shot himself accidentally,” she said.

She said Constable Seidu was immediately taken to the Police Hospital in Accra for medical attention.

At the hospital, she said the constable was admitted and was receiving treatment, “until the evening when the Accra Police Command paid him a visit only for us to be told that he had passed on.”

She stated, however, that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had since taken over the investigations into the matter.

Constable Seidu, who is a Muslim, has since been buried in accordance with Islamic tradition.
