Polytechnic administrators disappointed in FWSC

The Kumasi Polytechnic chapter of the Polytechnic Administrators Association of Ghana (PAAG) has registered its disappointment at the refusal of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to honour its obligations on the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS).

It has consequently appealed to the FWSC to honour its agreement (communiqué) with the PAAG, failure of which the association would resort to all legitimate means to ensure that the FWSC honours its part of the communiqué.

This was contained in a statement signed by the President of the Kumasi Polytechnic chapter of the PAGA, Mr Austin Luguterah, and issued at a news conference in Kumasi.

The statement recalled that at a meeting involving representatives of the  PAAG, and FWSC on August 21, 2012 an agreement was reached.

It said the Chief Executive of FWSC, Mr George Smith Graham, and the FWSC lawyer, Mr Cornelius Yawson, signed the said agreement and was witnessed by Mr Edward Antwi of PAAG and the General Secretary of PAAG, Mr Dan Larbi.

It said the agreement (the communiqué) outlined a roadmap on the payment of SSSS arrears and market premium to PAAG members with effect from January 1, 2010.

The statement further said the roadmap specifically provided that should the Ghana Association of University Teachers (GAUT) which was involved in a legal tussle with FWSC and seeking parity in SSSS premium with the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) succeed in their bid, PAAG would also be given parity with the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG).

It said PAAG members observed that GAUA won their legal battle to be at par with UTAG of which they had already been given 1.14 in premium “for over eight months now”.

“For PAAG, the logical stem was for the FWSC to bring us to 0.96 which is equal to what POTAG members are receiving in premium but despite persistent appeals, the FWSC has failed to act”, the statement read.

“We want to put on record that the PAAG is the only union that has never been on strike and has always co-operated with the FWSC but the latter has taken our co-operation as a weakness and betrayed our trust,” it added.
