Prez Mahama inspects road works in Accra
President John Dramani Mahama yesterday inspected work on the 15km Accra East Corridor road reconstruction project and appealed to the public to be patient as the government took steps to repair deplorable roads in various parts of the country.

He said road construction was an expensive venture and, therefore, time was required to mobilise the needed resources to fund them.
The GH¢67-million project is the first major link road between East and West Accra.
It is being financed by the government and a facility from the World Bank.
The project includes the dualisation of the Giffard Road from the 37 Military Hospital to the La Palm Junction and the construction of a new interchange at Congo Junction.
As part of the project, two supplementary sub-projects are being undertaken. They are the improvement of roads at Teshie and Burma Camp.
One major benefit of the project is that traffic at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange and the Accra Mall will be reduced because motorists using the Spintex Road to West Accra and around the Flower Pot area can avoid the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange by using the new Burma Camp Road.
Social tension
President Mahama said he was aware of the way bad roads in parts of the country had evoked social tension in some communities.

“I know that in several communities across the country, the people are concerned about their road network. Everybody feels his road is more important than the others and so you see people demonstrating against bad roads in their areas,” he said.
However, he said because roads were expensive to construct, the government had to mobilise resources to execute such projects.
Accra East road project
Touching on the importance of the Accra East road project, President Mahama said it would improve the traffic situation in the city.
He expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work and said he was hopeful that a good part of the roads being tackled would be open to traffic by the end of the year.
The Director of the Department of Urban Roads, Alhaji Abass Awolu, who conducted the President round the project, said portions of it would be completed this year, while the remaining portions would be ready by the end of next year.
