Prosecute Gyan for attacking ‘democratic institution’ — Nyaho-Tamakloe

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe, has called on the State to take up the assault case involving Baffour Gyan, a former Black Stars player, and the Ashanti Regional Editor of the Graphic Communications Group Ltd, Mr Daniel Kenu, and prosecute the former for his attack on a democratic institution.

According to Dr Nyaho Tamakloe, “The attack on the journalist was not an attack on one person, but an attack on a democratic institution and I’m talking about Graphic.”

Sharing his thoughts in a telephone interview yesterday, he told the Daily Graphic that “if the case has been withdrawn it eliminates the possibility of bringing to justice people who believe they are above the law because of a false delusion of stardom.”

Mr Kenu was reported to have been attacked by thugs in the company of Baffour Gyan, brother of the skipper of the Black Stars, and the case has been at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Court since September 8, 2014.

After two appearances in court, Mr Kenu wrote to the Court to discontinue with the case citing family, health and psychological discomfort as his major reason.

Mr Kenu was believed to have been assaulted for questioning the Al Ain striker about the whereabouts of Hiplife artiste Theophilus Tagoe, aka Castro.

Dr Tamakloe described Kenu’s decision to drop charges against Baffour Gyan as unfortunate and expressed displeasure at the turn of events.

“What happened was the worse display of arrogance, and if the perpetrators are not punished, it leaves a dangerous precedent. Even if the complainant, that is the journalist, is no longer interested in pursuing the matter, the state should have a vested interest in this criminal case,” he stated.

He further argued that from the unfolding drama, the leadership of Asamoah Gyan as Captain of the Black Stars had been greatly compromised and strongly called on the leadership of the football fraternity to look at the issue carefully.

He cited Mr John Terry, who was stripped as captain of the England Football Team for allegedly having an affair with the girlfriend of his colleague, Wayne Bridge.

He asked: “Will Asamoah Gyan have fought a foreign journalist who might have questioned him on the mysterious disappearance of Castro, the musician?”
