Over 80 women in Accra have benefited from a free breast cancer screening exercise organised by the R122 women’s organisation in partnership with Challenging Heights as part of efforts to raise awareness and promote early detection.
The event, held on October 5, 2025, formed part of R122’s flagship initiative, “Living Well, Living Aware,” and was one of several activities marking this year’s global Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Executive Director of R122, Mrs Hannah Addo Ahedor, said the initiative was aimed at encouraging early diagnosis and saving lives through education and regular screening. “Breast cancer is treatable,” she said. “But sadly, too many women are diagnosed when it is already too late. Our goal is to change that narrative in our community, one woman at a time.”
The screening exercise was conducted by a team of health professionals from Pentecost Hospital, Madina, led by Senior Nursing Officer Leticia Gadzekpe and Senior Medical Officer and Quality Manager, Dr Ama Agyeman-Dua. Participants were also engaged in health and wellness discussions, including talks on healthy eating and lifestyle practices designed to promote overall wellbeing.
According to organisers, the event was not only about medical screening but also about building community, strengthening support networks, and inspiring women to become wellness advocates within their homes and social circles.
Mrs Addo Ahedor said this year’s initiative marked the beginning of what R122 intends to make an annual tradition. She reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to addressing the spiritual, social, and economic challenges faced by women.
“By empowering women through faith, knowledge, and wellness, we are equipping them to lead healthier, more purposeful lives,” she added.
