Reconstituted Bawku Peace Committee inaugurated

The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr James Tiigah, last Tuesday inaugurated the Reconstituted Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee (BIEPC) at Bawku with a call on its members to respect one another’s views and help expose those who hide under the cover of the conflict to cause mischief.

He tasked the committee to also advise the youth to avoid taking the law into their own hands at the least provocation.

The minister further charged the members to critically examine issues that bordered on the conflict and "let these guide us in our deliberations".

Mr  Tiigah expressed appreciation to the Mamprusis for returning to the committee.

"It is my hope and prayer that we shall entrench this committee to make it a reference point to address the day-to-day issues bordering on the insecurity situation caused by the conflict and to make it a stepping stone towards addressing the substantive issues," he intimated.

Responsibility

According to the minister, "The resolution of this conflict rests more in the hands of the people of Bawku; state interventions and court rulings will only end up fuelling the already volatile situation."

Mr Tiigah noted for instance that the Bawku Municipal Assembly spent GH¢50,000 monthly to manage the conflict which, he said, could have been channelled into development projects for the municipality.

The Chairman of the Regional Peace Council,  Naba Sigri Bewong, said the committee should make no room for mistrust among its members.

"It must pull all sections of the community along by regularly sharing the outcomes of their deliberations to help reduce misinformation about the conflict and the work of the committee," he pointed out.

Commitment

The Co-Chairmen of the Mamprusis and Kusasis, Dr Samuel Bugri and  Mr Thomas Abilla pledged their commitment towards ensuring that the committee achieved its main objectives at bringing a lasting solution to the conflict.

The Bawku District Chief Executive, Mr Issahaku Bukari, stated that due to the cooperation of the Municipal Security Council there was relative peace in the area, adding that the security council had received two assault rifles from some combatants in response to the appeal for people to return their weapons for cash.
