Road closures and alternative routes announced as NPP and NDC hold final rallies in Accra

The Ghana Police Service has announced road closures and alternative routes to ensure safety and minimise traffic congestion as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) hold simultaneous grand rallies in Accra on Thursday, December 5, ahead of the December 7 elections.

The NPP will host its “Possibilities Victory Rally” at the UG Sports Directorate Park near the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, while the NDC will hold its “Resetting Ghana – Let’s Finish Strong” rally at Zurak Park in Madina.

Given the close proximity of the two venues along the Accra-Madina stretch, the Police have expressed concerns about potential confrontations. However, both parties have opted to maintain their respective locations, citing political reasons.

Road closures and access restrictions

To facilitate the rallies, the Police have announced the following road closures and restrictions:

- North Legon and Memuna Roads: These roads will be closed to the general public to provide adequate space for the NDC rally at Zurak Park.

Designated routes for supporters

The Police have outlined specific routes for supporters of both parties to ensure safe and orderly movement to their respective rally grounds:

- For NPP Supporters:

  - From Adenta: Turn left at Ritz Junction, proceed through American House, and connect via Opkonglo to the UG Sports Directorate Park.

  - From Dome: Turn right at Haatso Junction, head towards GIMPA, and access the rally venue through the University of Ghana.

- For NDC Supporters:

  - From Tetteh Quarshie: Turn right at Shiashie, proceed along Lagos Avenue, connect via Trinity Avenue to UPSA, and then turn left onto the UPSA road to the Madina-Accra highway, before turning right to Zurak Park.

  - From Dome: Take a left turn at KFC Junction and proceed towards Wisconsin.

  - From Adenta: Supporters may use any suitable route to reach the venue.

Traffic and safety measures

The Police anticipate significant traffic congestion due to the rallies and have advised commuters to consider alternative routes. Group movements of supporters, especially on motorbikes, will be restricted around the venues to prevent congestion and ensure safety.

Strategically stationed Police officers will assist supporters and manage traffic flow.

Appeal for comportment and public assistance

The Police have urged all parties and their supporters to maintain the decorum exhibited throughout their campaigns to ensure peaceful rallies.

“We entreat the parties and their supporters to carry into tomorrow's rally the level of comportment they have exhibited in their campaigns so far to ensure a peaceful and orderly event,” the statement read.

The public has been encouraged to report any security concerns to the Election Emergency Command Centre via the toll-free number 0800311311.

Significance of the rallies

Thursday’s rallies mark the climax of intense campaigning by Ghana’s two leading political parties. The events are expected to draw massive crowds and dominate national attention, with both parties vying for critical support in the Greater Accra Region, a key battleground in the closely contested elections.

As the nation gears up for the polls, the Police remain committed to ensuring safety, law, and order during these high-stakes events.
