Rwandan delegation learns from G-PAK

A delegation from Rwanda and the International Trade Centre (ITC) has paid a working visit to G-PAK Limited, a subsidiary of Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), in Accra to explore possibilities of establishing business between the two parties.

The visit was also to assist towards the development of the capacities of packaging centres in Rwanda.

Rwanda’s perspective

The Programme Coordinator and Consultant of ITC, Mr Kofi Essuman, said there was no active participation on the field of packaging in Rwanda.

Giving the overview of the operation in Rwanda, he said the country depended on regional and international suppliers for nearly 100 per cent of its packaging needs.

Within Rwanda, Mr Essuman said, the packaging industry was at infancy with only a handful of manufacturers producing paper bags and occasionally, corrugated boxes.

Project intervention for Rwanda

Mr Essuman said a model had been designed to provide technical assistance to improve value addition and establish packaging facility in the country.

He said a private sector organisation would manage the facility for the benefit of all sectors in Rwanda prioritised by the selected group and their identified needs for improved packaging.

He expressed the hope that a partnership with G-Pak would be created as a one-stop solution pertaining to packaging issues in Rwanda by assisting enterprises to identify and source suitable equipment, material and technology in the packaging industry.

G-PAK

The Director of G-Pak, Mr James Dadzie, said G-Pak had been in the industry for the past 30 years.

According to him, the packaging industry in the country had capsized because some of the industry players were sourcing their packaging from Asia.

That, he said, had impeded the success of the packaging industry, and therefore could not compete on the international market.
