Safe Water Network Ghana marks World Toilet Day 2025 with call for stronger action on sanitation

Safe Water Network Ghana has joined the global community to mark World Toilet Day 2025 with a call for stronger national action to expand access to safe toilets and improve sanitation. The organisation made the call in a statement issued on November, 18, 2025.

The network said access to improved toilet facilities is important for human dignity and the health of the public. It noted that with five years left to reach the Sustainable Development Goals, government must step up policies that will support Goal Six on water and sanitation.

This year’s World Toilet Day is being observed on November, 19, 2025 under the theme “We’ll Always Need the Toilet”.

Apt theme

The Country Director of Safe Water Network Ghana, Charles Nimako, said the theme reflects the need to protect and invest in sanitation systems as communities deal with pressure from population growth, gaps in infrastructure and climate change. He said sanitation is a basic human need and not a privilege.

“Despite progress made over the years, many households and institutions across the country continue to struggle with access to clean and reliable sanitation services, largely due to limited water supply,” Mr Nimako said.

SWN contribution

Mr Nimako said the network’s work to expand safe, affordable and reliable water services is helping to reduce the sanitation gap, especially in underserved communities. He said Safe Water Network Ghana has extended piped water connections to more than 15,000 households, schools, clinics and small businesses across the country, reaching over 600,000 people.

“These improved water systems are helping communities maintain cleaner environments, strengthen public health and build resilience against climate related pressures,” he said. The statement added that safe water and sanitation are closely linked. “Every piped connection we deliver brings us closer to a future where every household and institution can maintain clean, dignified and sustainable sanitation,” he said.

Commitment

Mr Nimako said as part of the 2025 observance, Safe Water Network Ghana has renewed its drive to work with government, private groups and local communities to speed up national efforts toward universal access to safe water and sanitation.

He thanked its partners, including the Government of Ghana, Stone Family Foundation, Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, One Foundation, Helmsley Charitable Trust and Uptime Global, for their support toward improved water and sanitation outcomes.

He said Ghana will reach a future where every person enjoys clean and safe sanitation services when there is steady effort and investment.
