Thief arrested

Sick man turns thief

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a refuse collector to three years imprisonment for stealing a car which was meant to convey him to the hospital.

William Sarfo is said to have stolen the vehicle after deceiving its driver that he was sick and therefore needed help.

Sarfo pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing and was sentenced by the court, presided over by Mr M.E Essandoh, on his own plea.

The facts as presented by the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Maxwell K Oppong, were that on April 9, 2016, the driver of the car, who is also a mechanic, was driving the car from La-Wireless to Osu after servicing it.

On reaching a spot in La-Wireless, he said the mechanic saw Sarfo standing in the middle of the road holding two stones in his hands.

According to the prosecutor, the mechanic upon seeing Sarfo felt he needed help and quickly got down from the vehicle to assist him.

Immediately, he drew nearer, Sarfo laid on the ground and started shouting.

Chief Inspector Oppong stated that the driver sought the assistance of someone who was standing a few metres away from the scene.

He said Sarfo on realising that the driver’s attention was not on him quickly ran into the car and sped off.

Luck, however, eluded him as he was intercepted by a police patrol team which arrested him after he failed to produce a driving license and the relevant documents of the car.
