Somanya senior citizens benefit from health screening exercise

A non-governmental organisation (NGO) that advocates better care for the elderly, Onua Pa Foundation, last Saturday organised a health-screening exercise for 210 elderly people at Somanya in the Eastern Region.

The beneficiaries were screened for diabetes among other diseases, while the women had their breasts checked.

They were mostly aged 65 and above, and were members of two associations in Somanya: the Local Council of Churches and the Pensioners Association.

The medical team which undertook the exercise was made up of volunteers from the Police Hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and other institutions of the Ghana Health Service.

Commendation

At the event, the Chairman and Founder of Onua Pa Foundation, Mr Blessed Ayisi, commended sponsors of the exercise for supporting the initiative.

“We acknowledge our sponsors, especially Ecobank Ghana Limited, for being supportive of the organisation for the past three years, and also Stanbic Bank for coming to our aid this year,” he said.

Mr Ayisi said the foundation would continue to motivate the elderly and create a medium through which philanthropic individuals and organisations could show kindness to them.

Appreciation

The beneficiaries, for their part, expressed appreciation for the exercise. “I am overwhelmed by this gesture. I pray that other organisations will support us in like manner,” Madam Mary Amponsah, a 70-year-old retired teacher said.

The exercise ended with a get-together, also hosted by the Onua Pa Foundation, during which the senior citizens were refreshed.
