Sombre atmosphere at KUMACA following students deaths

There is a sombre atmosphere at the Kumasi Academy (KUMACA) as students in the school have been quarantined to avoid the spread of the H1N1 viral strain that has claimed some lives in the school.

The usual campus ambience is absent in the school as both students and teachers, as well as parents of the students, have been gripped by fear, following the mysterious deaths of the students.

When Graphic Online visited the school Friday afternoon, it observed what nearly could be described as a ghost school as the general atmosphere in the school was quite.

Few students were seen walking on the campus. Officials from the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Ministry of Health (MoH) and Ghana Education Service (GES) as well as other government agencies occasionally visit the school.

Meanwhile, health professionals are still on campus administering drugs to the students who have been quarantined and also observing their conditions.

In an interview, a parent of one of the hospitalized students, Mr Badu Nkansah have appealed to the government to take care of the hospital bills of those that have been admitted at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

According to him, government is only paying for the bills of the students admitted at the KNUST hospital and not those at the KATH.

Mr Badu said the high hospital bills was having a dire consequence on the parents as some parents are unable to pay for the drugs and other materials for their hospitalized children.
