Tigo Shelter Project reconstructs Dimabi Primary School

The Dimabi Nursery and Primary School at Tolon Kumbungu in the Northern Region, which was in a deplorable state, has been reconstructed under the Tigo Shelter 4 Education Project.

The project, the fourth to be undertaken by the organisation, formed part of Tigo Ghana’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme dubbed “Shelter 4 Education”, under which six deprived communities in the country without good educational infrastructure will be supported to build such facilities.

The school was provided with a six-classroom block, a headmaster’s office, a staff common room and a public place of convenience.

The Headmaster of the school, Mr Issifu Abubakari, said the poor state of educational infrastructure in the community affected the quality of education and also posed as a disincentive to parents who wanted to send their children to school.

“Parents in this farming community prefer to have their children to assist them with farming rather than allow them to learn under structures they describe as horrible,” he said.

Infrastructural facilities

He said due to the problem with educational infrastructure in the area, most teachers posted to the village by the Ghana Education Service sometimes did not accept the posting, and that had negatively impacted on the development of the community and contributed to the migration of the youth to urban centres in the country in search of greener pastures.

The Director of Corporate Communications and CSR of Tigo Ghana, Ms Gifty Bingley, said the organisation passionately believed that education held the key to the success of every nation, and that Shelter 4 Education Project initiative in deprived communities was Tigo’s way of contributing to the lives of children, who are future leaders of Ghana and the world at large.

She noted that helping children get quality basic education was important because it was the foundation to shaping their dreams and ensuring that they helped to build a better Ghana, adding, “We hope that by providing them with a conducive learning environment, they can concentrate on their studies to ensure a brighter future.”
